Instructions
- The test lasts 120 minutes. It is marked out of 100; the pass mark for the interview is 60.
- Show all your workings and state the units. Round to two decimal places.
- Apply the design rules given in the documents and the Sphere standards.
- The scenario, the company and the figures are fictional.
- Any outside help (another person, artificial intelligence) is forbidden.
Original practice test, built on the format of written tests used by United Nations agencies and international NGOs. The context and figures are fictitious.
Documents provided
Drilling contractor's report: depth drilled 150 m; casing and screens installed down to 150 m; invoiced for 150 m at 180 USD per metre, i.e. 27,000 USD. The report is countersigned by the NGO technician responsible for supervising the works.
Measurement during pump installation (12 October), with a weighted dip tape, by the NGO team: bottom of the borehole at 120 m.
Constant-rate pumping test (24 h): yield 12 m³/h; static water level 42 m; dynamic water level stabilised at 60 m after 18 h; recovery to 95% of the initial level in 6 h.
Design rules: operating yield = 70% of the stabilised test yield; pump intake at least 10 m below the dynamic water level.
- Population to be served (new arrivals, village 5): 9,600 people, i.e. 1,920 households.
- Target: 15 L per person per day.
- The existing borehole F3 already supplies 40 m³ per day to this village; it is operated at its maximum yield.
- Solar pumping planned on F7: 7 hours of effective pumping per day on average; back-up generator: 4 L of diesel per hour of pumping; diesel at 1.40 USD per litre.
- Existing tank: 45 m³. Design rule: storage equal to 50% of the daily volume supplied by F7.
- Existing tapstands: 6 tapstands with 4 taps each. Flow per tap: 7.5 L per minute.
| Parameter | F7 | F3 | WHO guideline value |
|---|---|---|---|
| E. coli (CFU/100 mL) | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Fluoride (mg/L) | 1.9 | 0.8 | 1.5 |
| Nitrate (mg/L, as NO3) | 12 | 9 | 50 |
| Conductivity (µS/cm) | 2,100 | 1,300 | no health-based value |
Both boreholes pump into the same network and the same tank.
Annual costs excluding fuel: 2 operators at 150 USD per month each; maintenance and spare parts 2,500 USD; chlorination 1,200 USD.

0 out of 100
Mark each answer honestly against the panel's grid: the total is calculated automatically.
Common mistakes that cost marks
- Calculating pumping with the 12 m³/h test yield instead of the operating yield.
- Thinking that additional panels make it possible to pump for longer.
- Sizing the taps without checking flow and distribution time.
- Considering the blended water at 1.59 mg/L as compliant, or on the contrary rejecting it without assessing the water shortage.
- Paying the whole invoice or accusing the technician without verification.
